Charmaine Pollard will be facilitating a six week therapeutic writing group, based on reading and writing poetry to promote health and wellbeing.
Poetry Therapy is the intentional use of poetry and other forms of literature for healing and personal growth. Research over the last 30 years has found links between writing, health and wellbeing.
You will gain an opportunity to experience ways in which creative and expressive writing can help you improve your confidence and self esteem.
How therapeutic writing works
I will create a safe and supportive environment for personal exploration. I use various prompts such as: words, poems, art, post-cards, metaphors, positive affirmations, stories, unsent letters and acrostics.
The exercises include individual tasks, pair work, small and large group work and some guided imagery.
You especially benefit when you share your writing. Hearing your words validated by others can be a powerful learning experience and can lead to deeper levels of understanding and increased confidence. However, you always decide what you wish to share.
Who should attend
This group is for anyone interested in the ways writing and poetry can enhance wellbeing, including students, writers, counsellors, therapists, drug and alcohol workers, support workers, social workers, nurses and teachers.
No previous experience of reading or writing poetry or creative writing is required, nor is there any need to worry about spelling, grammar or punctuation, only a willingness to share, reflect and experiment with words in a supportive environment.
I can provide attendance certificates for those using the group for continuing professional development (CPD) purposes.
Please bring a notebook and pen.

I am a BACP accredited counsellor and a qualified poetry therapist, I undertook my training in poetry therapy with The International Federation for Biblio/Poetry Therapy in U.S.A.
I am a member of Lapidus the UK organisation for writing and reading for health and wellbeing. I am also a professional member of National Association for Writing in Education (Nawe).
With 17 years’ experience of helping clients and more recently seven years working with people using therapeutic writing in group settings, I am passionate about how words can bring about healing and transformation.
The group will last for 2 hours. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
